Forming the Club Print

Sitzundjibers was born in 1954.  It was the brainchild of Don Sohn and a few other young, single, well-educated, hard-working and upwardly mobile professionals.

They had found themselves lacking an active social life, as they witnessed more and more friends and classmates moving on to marriage, babies and the suburbs.  Don began by double-dating, with the goal of establishing a core group of people interested in sponsoring dances once a month or so.

The club name is a bit tongue-in-cheek.  It's made-up German: Sitz from skiing -- a sitzmark is a rut left in the snow from an ungraceful fall; Jibers from sailing -- a gybe is when a sailing boat turns its stern through the wind.  In other words... Skiers and Sailors.

The venues and the entertainment in the early years were creative and exciting and, little by little, the word got out:  Sitzundjibers was the club to join if you were over 25 and interested in socializing with an active and attractive group of people.
